The staff of VIR are pleased to cordially congratulate Prof. Vladimir Dmitrievich Kobylyansky on the momentous event in his life—the 90th birthday!
You are an outstanding scientist, renowned expert and incontestable authority in the field of plant genetics and breeding, and as such you have won well-deserved respect and prestige among the scientific community both in this country and abroad.
Your theoretical works laid the foundation for a new natural system and phylogeny of the genus Secale L., covering along with the natural diversity of species a number of new rye forms evolved as a result of human activities, while your efforts in discovering new species, varieties and forms of rye helped to establish priorities in rye breeding practice.
Your experimental research underpinned and promoted successful implementation of new trends in winter rye breeding: for resistance to lodging and diseases, for producing heterotic rye hybrids and multipurpose cultivars.
Thanks to your contribution, the breeding of low-pentosan grain fodder rye is presently practiced at various agricultural institutions in the European part of Russia, West and East Siberia.
Under your supervision, 28 postgraduate and 5 doctoral students prepared and successfully defended their theses for scientific degrees in the specialty of plant breeding and seed production.
On the day of your glorious anniversary we wish you, dear Vladimir Dmitrievich, sound health, long lifespan, and new achievements in your work!

the VII Congress of the Vavilov Society of Geneticists and Breeders
The International Congress “VII Congress and Associate Symposiums of Vavilov Society of Geneticists and Breeders on the 100th Anniversary of the Department of Genetics of Saint Petersburg State University” will be held on 18-22 June 2019 in St. Petersburg on the campus of St. Petersburg State University “Mikhailovskaya Dacha” (109, Sankt-Peterburgskoye Shosse, New Peterhof)
In the frames of the Congress it is intended to hold plenary sessions, symposiums and poster sessions to highlight the entire breadth of modern trends in genetics and breeding.

Following the Results of the Conference
To commemorate the 130th anniversary of Nikolay Vavilov, the 4th International Vavilov Conference N. I. Vavilov`s Ideas in the Modern World was held on 20-24th November 2017 with support from the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations, Saint Petersburg Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Committee for Science and Higher School of the Government of Saint Petersburg, and Russian Foundation for Basic Research (Project ¹ 17-0420576 Ã). The anniversary conference has surpassed everyone’s expectations both in terms of representativeness and the content of its scientific agenda.
All in all, 314 participants from 25 countries (Russia, France, Canada, Germany, USA, UK, Japan, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Abkhazia, Belarus, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Moldova, and Kyrgyzstan) took part in the conference. They represented scientific institutions, international organisations, genebanks, breeding centres, commercial firms, universities and non-governmental agencies, which turned the conference into one of the most significant scientific events.
The opening ceremony as well as the plenary session of the conference took place at the Big Hall of Saint Petersburg Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (5, Universitetskaya Embankment). The venues for break-out sessions were the Pompeian and Pink Halls of VIR (44, Bolshaya Morskaya Street).
