ALL-RUSSIAN WORKSHOP ON DATABASESХ

    In the period from the 13th - 16th of June 2011 specialists of the N.I. Vavilov Research Institute of Plant Industry conducted a scientific workshop entitled: “Creation of the All-Russian database on plant genetic resources of cultivated plants” at the Kuban Experiment Station (Krasnodarsky region).

    The goal of the workshop was to familiarize the staff members of the leading RAAS breeding centers of the Russian Federation with legislative and international aspects of work with plant genetic resources and modern methods of information support for PGR collections.

Participants were also told about technologies of various database creation as well as managing and carrying out analytical work on data available to improve the use of PGR material for development of new varieties. The program of the workshop comprised training courses on creation, management and maintenance of passport and evaluation databases of accessions included into PGR collections. All participants received a manual on creation and maintenance of databases as well as printed materials. The knowledge and skills received during the workshop will help to create a unified All-Russian database of PGR-collections.

    In course of the workshop participants familiarized with activities of the VIR`s Kuban Experiment Station conducted on conservation and breeding of VIR`s world collection accessions, they visited both trial fields and VIR`s branch: "Kuban genebank", where they examined underground storage containing accessions from the VIR`s world collection.

    All participants of the workshop will be given special certificates.
