Germination of flax pollen

The evaluation of flowering and pollination dynamic of the crop is very important for the development of crossing technique. The process was deeply studied in Russia. It was discovered, that the day before flowering petals appear on the top of the bud. At that time stigma is already mature, but anthers are closed. Next day flowers open at 6 a.m.(Moscow time). The fertilisation happens in 3 hours after pollination. On the basis of these data, the crossing technique was developed. Buds of "tomorrow" flowers are emasculated, and the pollen of father plant immediately is placed on the stigma.

The preliminary evaluation of flax flowering was made in the South of Portugal. The results showed the great dependence of the pollination dynamic on the air temperature. At low temperature (less then 20C) petals, appeared on the top of the bud, do not develop into flower for several days. At 14C they can stay for 4 days. It is important, that tolerance to cold depends on the variety genotype. Belinka is more resistant to cold, then Elise. At temperature about 25C, flowers open at 7 a.m. (Portuguese time). In the afternoon the fertilisation is done. The most interesting phenomenon was discovered in spring sowing trial, when flowering happens in May under the air temperature of about 30C. In those conditions the fertilisation occurs in buds during the evening before the day of flowering. This data shows that for the conditions of hot regions a spatial crossing technique must be developed.
