S. tuberosum L. var. chilotanum Buk. et Lechn.

S.M. Bukasov. Potatoes of South America and their breeding use, Leningrad, 1933, p. 80

Diagnosis: Var. chilotanum is one of the most interesting varieties of Chiloe, very brightly distributed there, having many common characters with breeding varieties, but at the same time having among all varieties of S. tuberosum the thinnest anther filaments and the longest papillae, which allows to separate it in a single variety.
Tubers are dark blue, seldom blue-speckled, round, rarely elongate.
Plants erect, stem is high, intensively colored. Leaf of selection cultivars type (Imperator et al.) with large bright lobes. Leaf formula: leaflets 4/3-5/3, primary leaflets in final seria 0, primary leaflets in first series 2-4.
Flowering takes place at more than one tire. Long pedicel. Inflorescence forks go at an acute angle. Pedicel above articulation is often long, more seldom not long about 6-7 mm, colored or green; articulation is slightly colored with a bright strip, situated at 2/3 of pedicel length. Pedicel is brighter at the top.
Calyx is more bounded from pedicel than by the variety Early Rose, symmetric (more seldom- bilabiate) with narrow leaflets, small or big, up to 12 mm long, with specific acumen, usually not very long, about one fourth, more rarely up to half length of calyx, in the latter case up to 5 mm long, but wide.
Corolla has small, wide lobes and small acumens. Corolla is slight-purple with white tips up and down and yellow short star. Corolla has «demissioidniy» shape and “klobukovidniy” acumens.
Often (in Autumn) white tips on the top are very big, merging in a whole white border, from the down side the corolla is white with translucent color on the top surface.
Stamen filaments among S. tuberosum are the most thin, average thickness is about 800-900 µ from 700 to 1000 µ, while by breeding cultivars the thickness is always bigger 1000 micr., by Early Rose; about 1300 µ. Stamen filaments are long and are yellow or colored with anthocians.
Stamens sometimes small with length about 4,5 mm; usually big and degenerated with length up to 7 mm; yellow, sometimes anthocyan colored. Columne is erected similar to recurvatum. The style is thin, (650-750 micr.), almost always spirally curved, slightly exserted over the stamens. Papillae are long, 70-100 micr. (by breeding species they are rarely more than 70). Stigma is wide, usually short, sometimes high, slightly flattened.
It is grown on the island Chiloe: Ancud, Juz. 1938, 1939, 1969, 1955, 1954, 1951, 2023. An accession from Yutuy 1969 is distinct in strongly degenerated green anthers, obtuse leaflets. Native names: papa americana, camota, barmacca, indiana, camotilla. According to Voskresenskaya, chilotanum is close to following varieties: Golden eyes, Peach blossom, Liebscher.
1) Small size of acumens are sometimes connected with anther degeneration. On some flowers, acumens can be of a normal form and big size.
2) All numbers referring the thickness of style and filaments and length of the papillae are taken from Pigulevsky.
